چکیده

We explore the ConceptNet 4 common-sense knowledge base using the tools of network analysis. This exploration is interesting in its own right, but a primary goal is developing methods that are potentially useful for improving the performance of the knowledge base on various common-sense reasoning tasks. ConceptNet has been used by its creators and others for various tasks, and ConceptNet 4 has recently been shown to perform well on the verbal portion of an IQ test for young children, using simple procedures to answer test questions. The network analysis of ConceptNet 4 is a task of interest in itself, as the knowledge base is an example of a large network with ground truth provided by the meaning of concepts. We give several examples of the results of community finding algorithms, spreading activation and rule mining. These results can be useful for finding missing and incorrect links, and for building a background knowledge that could be used to provide additional forms of reasoning in the knowledge base.

Teaching Machines about Everyday Life

In order to build software that can deeply understand people and our problems, we require computational tools that give machines the capacity to learn and reason about everyday life. We describe three commonsense knowledge bases that take unconventional approaches to representing, acquiring, and reasoning with large quantities of commonsense knowledge. Each adopts a different approach — Concept...

Ethnomethodology and Conversational Analysis

In a speech community, people utilize their communicative competence which they have acquired from their society as part of their distinctive sociolinguistic identity. They negotiate and share meanings, because they have commonsense knowledge about the world, and have universal practical reasoning. Their commonsense knowledge is embodied in their language. Thus, not only does social life depend...

Understanding Stories with Large-Scale Common Sense

Story understanding systems need to be able to perform commonsense reasoning, specifically regarding characters’ goals and their associated actions. Some efforts have been made to form large-scale commonsense knowledge bases, but integrating that knowledge into story understanding systems remains a challenge. We have implemented the Aspire system, an application of large-scale commonsense knowl...

ConceptNet — a practical commonsense reasoning tool - kit

ConceptNet is a freely available commonsense knowledge base and natural-language-processing tool-kit which supports many practical textual-reasoning tasks over real-world documents including topic-gisting, analogy-making, and other context oriented inferences. The knowledge base is a semantic network presently consisting of over 1.6 million assertions of commonsense knowledge encompassing the s...

OMCSNet: A Commonsense Inference Toolkit

Imparting commonsense knowledge to computers enables a new class of intelligent applications better equipped to make sense of the everyday world and assist people with everyday tasks. While previous attempts have been made to acquire and structure commonsense knowledge, they have either been inadequate in capturing the breadth of knowledge needed for the enterprise, or their complicated represe...
